      <image:title>Blog - I’m Just Here for the Keychains… - A little context, Key West is about 4 miles long and 1 mile wide. They have three piers -two city-owned and one privately owned. Imagine several thousand people pouring onto the island at once, as many as 21 times per week!</image:title>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ff3632015120a7c1d240077/1650667613332-HZKV2CPVQE7AAV3BE7FT/unsplash-image-5HKitWv9lZw.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - I’m Just Here for the Keychains… - For a long time this has included massive cruise ships, carrying anywhere between 2,000 to over 6,000 passengers at one time. When all of these travellers disembark and flood the relatively small city center, the overcrowding becomes a real problem for residents. And because cruise passengers generally only spend a few hours in a city, these thousands of people contribute relatively little to the local economy. In fact, the city center has seen more and more regular shops and services close in favor of souvenir shops aimed to appeal to short-term tourists.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - I’m Just Here for the Keychains… - Many national parks are protecting fragile ecosystems, and often visitors are asked to stay on designated paths to protect these ecosystems. A lot of visitors to the parks in the past two years were new visitors to the parks system, and not familiar with Leave No Trace principles or the importance of why parks ask visitors to follow certain rules. The parks quickly realized that they would need to step it up in terms of signage, presence of park rangers to provide guidance and explanation, and general education and outreach, to help first-time visitors and those with little outdoor experience visit the parks safely -not just for the environment and wild residents of the parks, but for the visitors too!</image:title>
      <image:caption>The increase in visitors also meant major overcrowding in some of the most popular parks. Miles long traffic jams on park roads and full to capacity parking lots with no end of cars searching for a space, makes for an unusable park and an unenjoyable visit. In an effort to manage this, some of the parks have implemented a reservation system for the high season, and require visitors to pre-register their visit, so that the parks can be kept at a manageable capacity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - I’m Just Here for the Keychains… - Overtourism aside, evidence has been mounting for years that the entrance of massive cruise ships into Venice’s port is contributing to the erosion of the city’s very foundations, putting the city in danger of some very real physical damage. 2020’s peak pandemic period gave Venice a moment of reprieve from the constant tourism churn and gave city officials a new perspective. During this quiet period, it became clear that this type of short-term tourism was doing more harm than good for the city, and that if a solution wasn’t found, Venice’s cultural identity and even its very structure, would be lost. This type and level of tourism was no longer sustainable.</image:title>
      <image:caption>So what was the solution? Well, it’s not that Venice wants to do away with all tourism, or even all visitors entering by cruise ships. But what could be done to lessen the impact on the city, while encouraging a longer visit, with a slower travel style?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - I’m Just Here for the Keychains… - A little Venetian refresher: Venice, Italy has been around since the early 400’s (yes, FOUR hundreds, we’re talking 1600 years of history!) and is built across 100 and some islands in the Venice lagoon, which are linked together by bridges and those iconic canals. However, the size of Venice’s city center, the old city, is estimated to be only about twice the size of Central Park in New York City.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Venice’s lagoon is relatively shallow, but channels have been dug to accommodate ships entering and docking at the heart of the old city.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - I’m Just Here for the Keychains… - Community-based tourism seeks to put the local community in the driver’s seat, instead of a third-party tourism operation that has no local ties to the environment or culture of Hawaii, except for turning a profit. Instead, Hawaiians are shifting the focus to tourism experiences created, owned and operated by locals, ensuring that the people who actually live in Hawaii are those benefiting from tourism dollars, and ensuring visitors are getting the sorts of experiences and insights into Hawaiian culture and history that are authentic, and not just created to entertain.</image:title>

You would find yourself limited there... To that I would say, “But the world is wide and beautiful. There’s much to see and do still in that part of California! You’re suddenly open to all sorts of new adventures!”</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - I’m Just Here for the Keychains… - Currently, the privately-owned (by a nearly million dollar donor to the Florida state governor’s political committee -just pointing that out!) Pier B has gone back to business as usual, and perhaps unsurprisingly many of the first cruise ships to return to the island were met by protestors. While the city commissioners uphold their end of the voters decision for the city’s piers, Pier B continues to host a cruise ship a day and has already seen as many as 3000 passengers unload on the tiny island at once.</image:title>

(Meaning, Panama takes more carbon out of the atmosphere than it produces!)</image:title>
      <image:caption>Eskildsen had spoken about this at COP26, and left that distinguished conference with an agreement that Panama would act as the pilot nation for a newly created UN Fund for the Climate Neutrality of Tourism, becoming the model for the rest of the world to look to for sustainable tourism practices, And now he was explaining it to a rapt group of global tourism professionals and… me, your friendly neighborhood travel agent. How… did that happen? And what does “sustainable tourism'' really mean?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Relaxing Restrictions…  Ahhh!</image:title>
      <image:caption>At this time, Hawaii is still requiring all visitors to provide COVID test results taken within 72 hours of the last leg of travel -this means if you have a layover in L.A., for example, that test needs to fall in a 72 hour window from the time you get on to the plane in Los Angeles, NOT when you left your house. You can read more about the Safe Travels program and testing requirements in a blog post I wrote about Hawaii’s return to travel.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Relaxing Restrictions… Ahhh! - One other thing worth noting at this time is that rules and restrictions are a little different between each island, and that masks are still mandated in Hawaii in all public places -including parks and beaches. The best way to know exactly what rules you need to follow is to check out the state’s COVID-19 portal, and click through to see which mandates apply to you based on the island(s) you are planning to visit.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Watching the states’ re-opening feels really promising and exciting. Slowly, slowly, travel is getting back to normal. This summer I’ll be traveling to Las Vegas for a conference, a couple of my favorite Pacific Northwest towns for weekend getaways with family and friends, and a classic family road trip to Yellowstone National Park. I can’t wait to share some of these adventures with you here on the blog, and as you decide where you’d like to explore this summer, I’d be delighted to help you put together the summer vacation you’ve been waiting two summers for!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Travel just got a lot easier… Vaccines and travel. - Not to mention, vaccinations are becoming the key to traveling to a number of countries, including travel hotspots like Belize, Iceland, Croatia, and the Seychelles. During the spring and summer, Greece, Thailand, and Israel will join that list. It’s all but guaranteed that many other countries will follow, particularly across Europe. Some countries like Ecuador and Guatemala are allowing vaccinated visitors to forgo pre-travel COVID tests or mandatory quarantine periods, and rumor has it that Hawaii will be following that same model.</image:title>
      <image:caption>A fan of cruising? A number of cruise lines will require passengers to be vaccinated, including major players like Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Virgin, and Viking. Princess, who plans to sail around the U.K. this summer, will require vaccines for those sailings, and I would not be surprised to see them extend that to their other sailings.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Travel just got a lot easier… Vaccines and travel. - Now, I’m not going to dance around the elephant in the room. There are folks that are upset that a vaccine might be required to travel. I have even heard an argument that requiring travellers to show proof of a vaccine is a violation of HIPAA laws. For what it’s worth, vaccine requirements for travel is absolutely nothing new. Many countries require travellers to show proof of certain types of vaccinations in order to be able to travel there.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Aloha! Welcoming back visitors to Hawaii… - It should be no surprise then that Hawaii, who welcomed over 10 million visitors in 2019, took careful steps to ensure during the pandemic that they did NOT become a COVID hotspot that would put Hawaiian residents at risk. Now, Hawaii has relaxed their entry requirements -including no longer mandating a long quarantine for visitors- and has officially welcomed the return of visitors to the islands.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Aloha! Welcoming back visitors to Hawaii… - One of the many beautiful things about Hawaii is the tourism industry’s commitment to preserving what makes Hawaii such a special place to visit. The 1980’s brought a boom in tourism development, and with it, the realization that sacrificing the islands’ coastlines and natural resources in the pursuit of endless profit does not align with Hawaii’s values. In the decades since, Hawaii has only strengthened their efforts to preserve the land, culture, and heritage of the islands. Tourism is an important industry for Hawaii, but its sustainability and positive contribution to Hawaiians’ quality of life, is top-of-mind.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Understanding current travel restrictions: - “Hannah, what happens if I test positive?” If you test positive before you are to return home, you will have to isolate and delay your travel until you are well and are able to show a negative COVID test. It brings up some important questions: Are you prepared for the cost of isolating in a foreign country for a week or more? What is the healthcare system like in your destination? Are you prepared for any fees or penalties for changing your return flight? What will happen if you can’t get home for work / kids / school / animals on the date that you anticipated?</image:title>
      <image:caption>You might also be tearing at your hair and asking, “AH, why has the government made this so hard?! I just want to be freeeee!” I get it, and I’m going to be super honest with you: It’s hard because they are trying to discourage people from traveling internationally, during a global pandemic. That’s the truth of it. It’s hard because it’s supposed to be hard. So to answer our original question, can we travel internationally, right now? Yes. It is possible. To some places. And if you choose to this year, I strongly suggest using a travel advisor. The information is constantly shifting, and you want someone whose job it is to be on top of it for you. And if you run up against complications with testing, travel delays and reschedules, or you do need to stay in your destination longer than planned, that travel advisor support is going to be invaluable. If you have any other questions about international travel right now, please, reach out! I promise to keep you updated as information changes. :) ‘Til next time, Travellers, Hannah</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Understanding current travel restrictions: - The other important thing travellers need to be aware of is that the cost of the test and the logistics of taking it, getting it processed and documented are all their responsibility. Included below is a breakdown of the differences between the two accepted tests. There are some resorts in the “sand and sun” destinations that are including testing on-site as a part of their packages, and there are rumblings that some international hotel chains may add that service in the future at their locations, but for the time being they all seem to be coalescing in the Caribbean and Latin America. What is NOT VALID is an anti-body test. These tests reveal if you had a past infection. Again, they are not the same as a COVID-19 test, and you will not be allowed to board your flight if this is the test result you bring. You must also bring an official attestation form, filled out and printed, to the airport. While I think some people have started to become aware of the testing requirements for international travel, this necessary form appears not to be common knowledge.</image:title>
      <image:caption>And finally, the CDC strongly recommends you get tested 3-5 days after you’ve returned home, that you quarantine for 7 days after returning home (even with a negative test result) and that if you DON’T re-test when you get home, to quarantine for 10 days. Whew.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Understanding current travel restrictions: - Some of the rules are pretty confusing to understand. Mexico, for example, requires no testing at all to enter, and you can fly right in. But if you wanted to drive across the border? Not allowed. No non-essential travel across the land border, to discourage the spread of COVID-19. But you can fly in…</image:title>
